Intent

The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum at our school is meticulously crafted to equip students with knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to navigate the world successfully and emerge as the next generation of game-changers. Our intent is to cultivate multilingual individuals who contribute to a prosperous and diverse society.

Our curriculum ensures students gain a systematic understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and phonics of their new language. This knowledge is reinforced through extensive, planned practice, allowing students to commit it to long-term memory. By this, they develop the ability to comprehend and manipulate language across a variety of contexts, adapting it to effectively and confidently communicate ideas. We emphasise the importance of reflection and improvement, empowering students to learn from mistakes and continuously enhance their skills. We provide opportunities for students to immerse themselves in learning and enrichment activities.

By making comparisons between languages and cultures, students develop respect and empathy, fostering a more tolerant society. Our curriculum encourages students to make use of available tools to progress and perform to their highest potential. Our approach is designed to inspire cultural curiosity, motivating students to explore and learn about the target language country. We nurture resilience by presenting challenging tasks, promoting independence and risk-taking in tackling these challenges. This prepares students for opportunities as global citizens, enhancing their cultural capital. Studying MFL exposes students to diversity, strengthening their ability to form relationships and promoting creativity through the exploration of different perspectives and etymology. It provides unparalleled opportunities for travel, fostering a sense of adventure as students dream in a new language and meet foreign game-changers.

Our approach emphasises the joy and fun in learning a new language, making the experience engaging and enriching. By developing linguistic skills, students gain new perspectives, meet new people, and experience foreign cultures first-hand. This equips them to be successful, healthy, and happy individuals who contribute positively to society.

The MFL curriculum at our school is more than just language learning; it is a gateway to becoming a better communicator, a more empathetic individual, and a culturally enriched global citizen.
