Intent

Art is everywhere; every living thing and man made object; everyday life is an art form. In our department we aim to encourage students to appreciate the arts, understanding how influential art is around the world, and how it will benefit them in their lives moving forward.

• We learn about art from around the world, as well as on our own doorstep, we aim to create independent, confident artists, capable of expressing their passions and interests in a variety of ways.
• We discuss and work to understand art and its origins, allowing for group discussion to grow ideas, sharing both successes and tackling failures, together within class and through teacher student interaction. We develop subject specific language skills to be able to discuss and explore our ideas, designs and opinions.
• We inspire our students to experiment and try new things, improving as we go, learning from mistakes and building confident artists to apply their creativity to the wider world as they move up the school and beyond.
• We embrace student differences and allow these to inspire our work.
• We intend to support students to establish both free and technical skills that allow for progression, regardless of their starting point.
• We build a foundation of skills from the National Curriculum, allowing for solid knowledge of the fundamentals of Art and Photography. Students learn skills to access a range of artistic techniques and processes to inspire and motivate students to work hard and feel proud of their achievements.
• We celebrate our achievements around the school through display and exhibition.

• Recording observations and experiences through drawing and photography is key to developing ideas.
• Our students have the ability to research and respond to ideas and sources with increasing confidence.
• The cyclical nature of learning in Art allows students to return to and develop practical skills in a range of media as the student develops through the school.
• The all-encompassing nature of the subject allows us to make cross-curricular links regularly in our learning.

Examination Preparation Materials

Art and photography examinations take place prior to GCSE students concluding their study in school, discretely from the main examination season.

Students receive specific information about the ‘theme’ prior to attending the examination, in accordance with the regulations set by the examination boards. For this reason there is little benefit drawing on past years’ information and that is the reason for us not posting it here.

In preparation for the examination, students must become familiar with the assessment criteria by which their work is judged. We have made this available to you below.
