Our tutors read aloud with during one tutor session each week. This gives students the opportunity to observe their tutors modelling the pronunciation of vocabulary, pacing and intonation whilst reading.
We have chosen different texts that we believe best engage our students with reading activity and promote reading for pleasure:
A range of interesting and engaging short stories from the 19th Century to Modern day that are accessible to Year 7 students and introduce them to ideas and concepts they will learn about in GCSE English.
Detective stories with a figure that some students will perhaps have some knowledge of from the TV series. Elements of mystery and opportunity encourage students to analyse and solve crimes. These are useful skills which students need across the curriculum.
This particular book is a collection of 12 accessible short stories.
A classic adventure novel which is both exciting and engaging. A canon text which is studied at GCSE in some schools and prompts discussions on ‘Big Ideas‘ which are explored and discussed in various subjects
This text is in the literary canon and is selected by some schools as a GCSE text.
This is a fantastic classic text for students and it includes a range of interesting and sensitive topics.
Some students will be aware of the film/stage production.
Set in the Jazz era, this contains elements of tragedy and psychological conflict which students can engage with and will find themes which are relevant to the English curriculum.
